In this story, Prickles is about to eat something that she shouldn’t – but unknown to her it’s very dangerous! Dog, Duck and Cat learn that things should always be put away safely in their place, to keep everyone safe from harm.
In this story, you will carry out an activity that looks at what is safe to eat and drink in the home, and whilst out and about.
Have a chat with your child to see if they have any questions or concerns.
Explain to your child:
Now you will now look at some things that may be found in a your home, that looks and smells nice, but if we ate or drank it, it would/could make us very poorly.
Display the ‘I smell nice, can you eat me sheet’ and ask your child to point out whether the item is safe, or could be dangerous, to eat.
Emphasise to your child:
None of these products are safe to eat even though they may smell, and look, very tasty.
Only ever use cleaning products for the job they are intended for.
You should only ever use these products if your parent, carer or guardian says it is ok for you to do so.
Anything that smells nice, but isn’t food, should never be eaten or drunk. Not all products are ‘dangerous’ to eat, but they could still make a person very ill.
Ask your child:
Do you remember that in the last activity we looked at things that may smell nice, but aren’t safe to eat? So, what should we do with these items?
We will now look at where products should be stored in the home.
Display the ‘Where should things be stored sheet’ and ask your child where they think the product should go and match up the product with where is should be stored correctly.
